A Week in the Scottish Highlands

Seven days driving the Highlands and Isle of Skye with castle stops, whisky distillery tips, and the weather reality.

March 16, 20262 min read349 words

Scotland's Highlands aren't London. Plan for rain, drive on the left, and leave time to just stare at things.

Days 1-2: Edinburgh

Day 1: Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle (£20), Arthur's Seat hike (free, 1 hour, best city view). Day 2: National Museum of Scotland (free), Dean Village, whisky tasting at a specialist shop (The Bow Bar or Whiski Rooms).

Day 3: Drive Edinburgh → Oban via Glen Coe

Rent car in Edinburgh. Drive north via Loch Lomond and Glen Coe (one of the world's most scenic drives). 4 hours driving but you'll want to stop constantly.

Oban is a seaside town, gateway to the islands. Overnight in a B&B.

Days 4-5: Isle of Skye

Drive + ferry to Skye (or drive via the bridge — slower but no ferry wait).

Day 4: Quiraing hike (2 hours, spectacular), Old Man of Storr (1.5-hour hike), Fairy Pools (touristy but worth once). Day 5: Neist Point lighthouse sunset. Dunvegan Castle (£16). Talisker Distillery tour (£25).

Days 6-7: Inverness + Loch Ness

Drive Skye → Inverness (3 hours via the Great Glen).

Day 6: Loch Ness — Urquhart Castle ruins on the water (£14). Boat tour on the loch (£30-40). Culloden Battlefield (£14) — Jacobite uprising site. Day 7: Drive back to Edinburgh (3.5 hours) or fly from Inverness.

Weather reality

Scotland gets rain. Plan for it with:

  • Waterproof jacket + pants (not just jacket)
  • Waterproof boots
  • Plastic bags for electronics
  • Don't cancel plans for drizzle — it clears fast

Summer is 17 hours of daylight. Winter is 7 hours.

Driving realities

  • Left side of the road
  • Single-track roads with passing places are common — pull INTO the passing place, don't pass the opposite car
  • Sheep on roads are routine
  • Diesel is ~£1.50/liter (~$7/gallon)

Cost (2 people, 7 days)

  • Flights US → Edinburgh: $700-1,000
  • Car rental: $350
  • Fuel: $250
  • Accommodation: $110/night × 6 = $660
  • Food: $60/day × 7 = $420
  • Castles + distilleries: $200

Total: $2,580-2,880 for 2 people with flights.
