Driving Iceland's Ring Road in 7 Days: Stops, Costs, Season

A week-long clockwise Ring Road itinerary with exact distances, fuel cost, when to go, and which side trips are worth the detour.

April 4, 20263 min read574 words

Iceland's Ring Road (Route 1) is 828 miles around the whole country. You can drive it in 3 days if you just want to cover ground. You should not. Here's the 7-day plan that actually lets you stop and experience it.

Clockwise vs. counterclockwise

Clockwise (Reykjavík → south coast first) is recommended. South coast is the highlight reel — you want it on day 1-2 while you're fresh and weather's most predictable. North and east are more rugged/variable.

The 7-day route

Day 1: Reykjavík → Vík (180 km) Golden Circle detour on the way: Thingvellir, Geysir, Gullfoss. Adds 120 km but you're here once. Vík overnight.

Stops between: Seljalandsfoss (walk behind the falls — bring raincoat), Skógafoss, Dyrhólaey cliffs. Reynisfjara black sand beach near Vík.

Day 2: Vík → Höfn (270 km) The glacier lagoon day. Fjallsárlón (less touristy, similar to Jökulsárlón), then Jökulsárlón itself (the famous one — book a zodiac or amphibian boat ride in advance), then Diamond Beach across the road.

Stop at Skaftafell (glacier hikes available) if you have energy.

Day 3: Höfn → Egilsstaðir (265 km) Eastfjords day. Fewer signature stops, more landscape. Stop in Djúpivogur for lunch. Reindeer sightings are common along this stretch.

Day 4: Egilsstaðir → Akureyri (270 km) Dettifoss and Selfoss (northeast) — Europe's most powerful waterfall. The north side of Dettifoss is unpaved but more dramatic.

Myvatn area is fascinating — pseudocraters, lava fields, geothermal Myvatn Nature Baths (much less crowded than the Blue Lagoon, half the price).

Akureyri overnight.

Day 5: Akureyri base day Optional whale watching from Húsavík (230 km round trip) — the best whale watching in Iceland.

Or relax in Akureyri (Iceland's "second city," 19,000 people), Akureyri Botanical Garden, Christmas House (yes, year-round).

Day 6: Akureyri → Stykkishólmur (390 km) Long driving day across the north. Glanni waterfall, Kolugljúfur canyon.

Into the Snæfellsnes peninsula — "Iceland in miniature." Kirkjufell (that iconic arrowhead mountain). Stykkishólmur harbor town overnight.

Day 7: Snæfellsnes → Reykjavík (165 km) Snæfellsnes loop in the morning: Arnarstapi, Búðir black church, Djúpalónssandur black pebble beach. Afternoon back to Reykjavík.

Cost reality (April 2026)

Iceland is expensive. Set expectations:

  • Campervan rental (7 days, shoulder season): $1,400-1,900
  • Fuel for 1,660 km total: ~$320 (gas is ~$2.10/liter)
  • Camping fees: $15-25/night × 6 = ~$130
  • Blue Lagoon (if visited): $88-110/person
  • Myvatn Nature Baths: $42/person
  • Food from supermarkets (Bónus, Krónan): $35/person/day × 7 = $490

Total for 2 people, 7 days: ~$2,800-3,400 before flights.

Hotel alternative adds ~$1,500-2,200 over camping.

Seasonal reality

  • Summer (June-August): Midnight sun, all roads passable, highest prices. 22 hours of daylight.
  • Shoulder (May, September): Great compromise. Fewer tourists, still-passable roads, aurora possible in September.
  • Winter (Oct-March): Ring Road DOABLE but requires experience with snow driving and flexibility. Some side roads close. Northern lights likely. Budget rent a 4WD.

Must-have gear

  • Waterproof jacket AND pants (not just one)
  • Layers (weather changes every 10 minutes)
  • Offline maps (cell coverage fails in places)
  • Headlamp
  • Portable food cooler if camping

Mistakes to avoid

  • Driving off-road. It's illegal, fined up to €3,500, and damages fragile moss that took centuries.
  • Going to the Blue Lagoon without booking. You MUST book. Walk-ins turned away.
  • Trying to squeeze in the Westfjords. That's a 3-day trip on its own.
  • Not checking road conditions daily. vedur.is (weather) and umferdin.is (roads). F-roads (mountain interior) close easily.
