Two Weeks on New Zealand's South Island

14-day South Island road trip covering Queenstown, Milford Sound, glaciers, and Kaikoura — with driving times and the season choice that matters most.

March 18, 20263 min read530 words

New Zealand's South Island is one of the great road trips on earth. 2 weeks is the minimum to do it right.

The route

Christchurch → Kaikoura → Abel Tasman → West Coast glaciers → Wanaka → Queenstown → Milford Sound → Dunedin → back to Christchurch.

Total: ~2,500 km over 14 days.

Days 1-2: Christchurch + Kaikoura

Day 1: Arrive Christchurch. Rebuild walking tour. Botanic Gardens. New Regent Street. Day 2: Drive to Kaikoura (180 km, 2.5 hours). Whale watching ($150 NZD, book ahead). Seal colony at Point Kean. Overnight.

Days 3-4: Abel Tasman

Long drive to Abel Tasman National Park via Nelson (6 hours from Kaikoura).

Full day hiking or kayaking the Abel Tasman coast track. Golden beaches, clear water. One-way kayak with water taxi return is the optimal half-day experience ($150 NZD).

Days 5-7: West Coast + glaciers

Long drive from Abel Tasman south along the west coast. Punakaiki pancake rocks. Franz Josef Glacier.

Heli-hike on Franz Josef Glacier ($550 NZD, weather dependent, book 3 days ahead, 30% cancel rate). Non-negotiable if you want to actually touch glacier ice — the walking paths only get you to a viewpoint.

Days 8-9: Wanaka

Drive Franz Josef → Wanaka via Haast Pass (280 km, 4.5 hours, spectacular).

Wanaka is quieter than Queenstown but equally beautiful. Roy's Peak hike (6 hours round trip, iconic view). The Wanaka Tree for the photo. Sticky Forest for mountain biking.

Days 10-11: Queenstown

Drive Wanaka → Queenstown (70 km, 1 hour — short by NZ standards).

Adrenaline capital of NZ. Pick your poison:

  • Nevis Bungy: 134m, $275
  • Shotover Jet: 60 km/h through canyons, $175
  • Skyline Gondola + luge: family-friendly, $85
  • Lord of the Rings tours: $200-300
  • Wineries in Gibbston Valley: more civilized, $80-120 for tastings

Day 12: Milford Sound

Drive from Queenstown to Te Anau (2 hours), then to Milford (2 more hours, one of the world's most scenic drives). Or fly from Queenstown (20 min, $240).

Cruise the Sound ($90-120 NZD, 2 hours). Mirror-still water on calm days. Waterfalls after rain (it rains a lot — the rain is the feature, not the bug).

Drive back or overnight in Te Anau.

Day 13: Dunedin + Otago Peninsula

Drive Queenstown → Dunedin (4 hours). Historic Scottish-founded city. Steepest street in the world (Baldwin Street). Royal Albatross Centre on Otago Peninsula (penguins + albatrosses, $70).

Day 14: Back to Christchurch, fly home

Long drive back (4.5 hours). Return rental car, fly home.

Seasonal reality

  • Nov-Feb (summer): High season, best weather. Crowds + high prices. Book everything 2+ months ahead.
  • March-May (autumn): Shoulder. Wanaka autumn colors. Dramatically quieter.
  • June-August (winter): Queenstown ski season. Everything else closes or slows.
  • Sept-Oct (spring): Good compromise. Lambs. Longer days. Variable weather.

Cost (2 people, 14 days)

  • Flights US west coast: $1,800-2,500
  • Car rental 14 days: $950
  • Fuel for 2,500 km: $350
  • Accommodation: $150/night × 13 = $1,950
  • Food: $75/day × 14 = $1,050
  • Activities (heli-hike, bungy optional, cruises): $1,200 for 2

Total: $7,300-8,000 for 2 people with flights. NZ is expensive — budget accordingly.
