A Long Weekend in Lisbon: What to Book, What to Skip

Three-day Lisbon plan focused on pastéis, hills, and day-trip options — with actual public transit advice and the scams to avoid.

Lisbon is compact enough for a weekend but rewards slower paces. Here's the plan we've seen work best for 3 days.

Day 1: Alfama + Castle

Start at Miradouro da Senhora do Monte — the city's best free viewpoint, less crowded than Graça. Walk down through Alfama's labyrinth of lanes. São Jorge Castle (€15) in late morning — go weekday if possible, weekend queues hit 45 minutes.

Lunch: Petiscos at a tasca (tavern). Prato do Dia runs €8-12.

Afternoon: Tram 28. Tourists cram the Praça Figueira starting point — board at Graça stop instead for a seat. Ride to Basilica da Estrela, walk back through Bairro Alto.

Evening: Fado in Alfama. A Baiuca is intimate and tourist-friendly. Clube de Fado is higher-end. Dinner before or during, reserve 3 days out.

Day 2: Belém

Metro or bus to Belém (30 min). Hit in this order to minimize queuing:

  • Jerónimos Monastery (€10): open 10 AM, arrive 9:45
  • Pastéis de Belém: try ONE for the tradition, then try better ones elsewhere (Manteigaria is arguably better and half the wait)
  • Belém Tower (€6): quick, iconic
  • MAAT museum if into contemporary art
  • Back to central Lisbon for late lunch

Afternoon in Chiado + Baixa. Elevador de Santa Justa (€6) is a tourist trap with 40 min queues — skip it, walk up from Rua do Carmo side for the same view.

Day 3: Day trip to Sintra OR LX Factory

Sintra (45 min train, €4.60 round-trip): Pena Palace is iconic but chaotic. Book online ahead. Combine with Quinta da Regaleira (€15) for the spiral well. Skip Moorish Castle unless you love ruins.

LX Factory alternative: Old thread factory converted to shops and restaurants. Under the 25 de Abril bridge. More modern Lisbon vibe, zero queues.

Scams/traps

  • Fake fado invitations in tourist areas — real fado doesn't need touts
  • "Ginjinha in chocolate cup" at tourist stands — fine as a one-off, but overpriced. Ginjinha Sem Rival in Rossio is the authentic spot at €1.
  • Tram 28 pickpockets — real. Use a cross-body bag.

Cost (2 people, 3 days)

Hotel in Chiado: €130-180/night × 2 = €320. Food: €60/day × 3 = €180. Sights + transit: €150. Total: ~€650 before flights.
