A Week in Bali for First-Timers: Ubud, Beaches, Volcano
A 7-day Bali split between Ubud's culture, Uluwatu's beaches, and Mount Batur's sunrise — without trying to see the whole island.
Bali is bigger than you think. Trying to see it all in a week is the #1 first-timer mistake. Pick two or three zones and stay put.
Days 1-3: Ubud (culture + jungle)
Base in Ubud town or Penestanan nearby. Villa with private pool $60-150/night.
Day 1: Arrive, settle in. Tegallalang Rice Terraces in afternoon (20 min from town). 50,000 IDR entry.
Day 2: Cooking class morning (Paon Bali or Casa Luna, ~$40). Afternoon: Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary (80,000 IDR), Ubud Art Market, Royal Palace.
Day 3: Mount Batur sunrise hike (~$50-80 incl transport + guide, 2 AM pickup, summit by sunrise). Optional afternoon: Campuhan Ridge Walk (free, 90 min, stunning).
Days 4-5: Beach south (Uluwatu or Canggu)
Transfer south (~90 min, $35 taxi).
Uluwatu for the iconic cliffside + surf scene. Single Fin bar for sunset, Kecak fire dance at Uluwatu Temple, beach clubs (Sundays, The Cave, El Kabron for quieter).
Canggu is more digital nomad + cafe scene. Echo Beach, Old Man's bar, La Brisa beach club.
Pick one.
Days 6-7: Nusa Penida day trip + final day
Nusa Penida (45 min fast boat, $20 round trip): Kelingking Beach viewpoint (the T-rex shaped cliff), Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong. One long day, but worth it.
Day 7: Final morning at hotel pool, transfer to airport.
Don'ts
- Don't try to add North Bali or Gili Islands. Either requires 2+ more days.
- Don't rent a scooter if you've never ridden one. Bali road accidents kill foreigners monthly. Hire a driver ($40-60/day) or use Grab.
- Don't get seduced by $5 massages in the street. Legit spas are $10-25 for 60 min, safer and better.
- Don't eat street food from unmarked carts. Bali belly is real. Stick to warungs (small restaurants) with visible customer turnover.
Cost (2 people, 7 days)
- Flights (US west coast): $1,000-1,400
- Villa/hotel: $90 avg × 6 = $540
- Food: $40/day × 7 = $280
- Activities (volcano, cooking class, Penida): $400
- Transport: $150
Total: $2,370-2,770 with flights.
